The First and Second Letters of Saint Clement

The writings attributed to Saint Clement of Rome, one of the earliest bishops of the Church and a disciple of the apostles, are among the most precious treasures of early Christian literature. His First Letter to the Corinthians (c. AD 95) is often regarded as the earliest Christian writing outside the New Testament. Written in the wake of division within the Corinthian church, it exhorts believers to humility, unity, and obedience to their bishops and presbyters. In its pages, we glimpse the living memory of the apostolic age, where the authority of the Church is exercised in love and rooted in fidelity to Christ’s commands.

The Second Letter of Clement, stands as one of the earliest surviving Christian sermons.  It urges repentance, perseverance, and holiness of life. Emphasizing baptismal commitment, the call to moral transformation, and the urgency of salvation, it reflects the seriousness with which early Christians lived out their discipleship.

This edition from Knights of Saint George Press makes Clement’s letters accessible as part of our Historical Studies in Church History series. A vital resource for understanding the continuity of Christian teaching and worship, it remains as timely today as when it was first read aloud in Corinth nearly two thousand years ago.
