The Didache, also known as The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, is one of the earliest Christian writings outside the New Testament. Likely composed in the late first century, it served as a manual for the growing Christian communities, offering practical instruction on faith, worship, and daily life. The text opens with the “Two Ways” teaching, contrasting the way of life with the way of death, and urging believers to walk in holiness, charity, and humility. It also provides one of the earliest descriptions of Christian liturgical practice, including baptism, fasting, prayer, the Eucharist, and the role of traveling teachers and prophets within the Church.

For students of Church history, the Didache is invaluable. It reveals how the early Church understood discipleship, structured worship, and lived as a distinct people of God in the wider world. It also gives a window into the transition from the apostolic age to the next generation of Christian leadership. Preserved through the centuries and rediscovered in the modern era, the Didache continues to inspire and instruct, reminding us that the essentials of Christian life—faith, worship, and love—have remained central since the very beginning.
