The Gospel of Nicodemus, also known as The Acts of Pilate, is one of the earliest Christian writings outside the New Testament, likely composed in the late first or early second century by the followers of Nicodemus, the Pharisee who visited Jesus by night in John’s Gospel. This text provides a vivid account of Christ’s trial, crucifixion, and resurrection, with particular emphasis on His descent into Hades, the Harrowing of Hades, and the liberation of the righteous from the bonds of death. By dramatizing these events, the Gospel illuminates how the earliest Christians—disciples of the Apostles—understood the cosmic significance of Christ’s work, linking the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy with the salvation of humanity. Portions of this text continue to be read or sung in Orthodox churches during Pascha, highlighting its enduring liturgical and devotional importance.
