Justin Martyr’s First Apology is one of the most important works of the second century, offering a rare glimpse into the life, worship, and defense of the early Christian Church. Written around A.D. 155, this groundbreaking text is addressed to the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, courageously presenting Christianity not as a threat to the empire but as the true philosophy that fulfills the deepest longings of humanity.

In this work, Justin explains what Christians believe, why they refuse idolatry, and how they gather for worship. His detailed description of Sunday liturgy—including the reading of the Scriptures, prayers, the kiss of peace, the Eucharist, and care for the poor—remains one of the earliest and clearest testimonies to the continuity of Christian worship.

Justin also defends Christians against slander, insisting they are loyal citizens who seek truth, virtue, and the common good. He points to the moral transformation of believers as proof of the power of Christ’s teaching.

For modern readers, the First Apology is invaluable: it connects us directly to the faith and worship of the earliest generations after the Apostles.
