Evagrius Scholasticus (c. 536–c. 594) stands as the final great Greek historian of the early Byzantine Church. In six meticulously detailed books, he continues the story of Christianity where earlier historians—Eusebius, Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret—left off, chronicling events from the Council of Ephesus (431) to the death of Emperor Maurice (602). A trained lawyer and eyewitness to many of the events he records, Evagrius combines precise legal reasoning with theological insight, providing an authoritative account of church councils, heresies, imperial policy, and the everyday struggles of Christian communities under Byzantine rule.

This edition, part of the Historical Studies in Christian History series by Knights of Saint George Press, presents Evagrius’s work with careful attention to clarity and readability, making it accessible for both scholars and general readers. From the triumphs and controversies of Chalcedonian orthodoxy to the devastating Justinianic plague and the political upheavals of the sixth century, Evagrius offers a unique window into a formative period of Christian history.
